Janazah (Funeral Prayer)
Janazah Checklist: Key Roles & Notifications
Agree four key roles beforehand to avoid confusion:
- Janazah Leader: Confirm whether the local Imam or a qualified close family member leads.
- Pre-Prayer Announcement: Pick one relative to speak for two minutes regarding debts, forgiveness, and cemetery directions.
- Graveside Dua: Designate who will lead the collective supplication after burial.
- Broadcast Details: Message attendees with the deceased’s name, Janazah time, mosque postcode, cemetery address, and parking guidance.
☐Determine which madhab your mosque follows (Hanafi / Shafi’i) for recitations and positioning.
☐Ensure Imam / lead knows which version of prayer is to be followed.
☐ Perform Janazah (funeral prayer) in congregation.
☐Held at the mosque, funeral centre, or cemetery prayer area.
☐There are NO Rukuh, Sujud, Athan, or Iqama.
☐Standing only.
☐Salatul Janazah is said silently.
☐Minimum of three lines facing the Qiblah.
☐The body should be placed in front of the person who leads the prayer.
☐Having the appropriate neeyah (Intention), raise your hands in the usual manner.
☐Four takbeers.
☐Say “Allahu Akbar”.
☐Fold your right hand over the left hand in the usual manner.
☐After 1st: Recite the Thana silently (for Shafi’i madhab – recite Surah Fateha).
They say: “Allahu Akbar”.
☐After 2nd: Salat upon Prophet recite the Durood-e-Ibrahim.
☐Then say: “Allahu Akbar”.
☐After 3rd: Du‘a (Supplicate) for deceased.
☐Then say: “Allahu Akbar”.
☐After 4th: Tasleem. “Assalamualaikum”, Tasleem is said twice for the Hanafi madhab once for the others.
☐Then make Dua (supplicate) for all dead Muslims.
☐ Console the family members.
