Grave Purchase and Deeds

5.Grave Purchase and Deeds

☐ Decisions to be made when arranging a funeral include:

  • Choosing a cemetery.
  • Purchasing a burial plot.
  • Book a date and time of the funeral.
  • Who to invite.

Contact your local council’s cemeteries department or private cemetery office to purchase a grave and obtain a Deed of Exclusive Right of Burial.

☐The Registered Owner of the Deed of Exclusive Right of Burial has the automatic right to be buried in the grave; they may also allow others to be buried in the grave. They do not, however, own the land itself. The ownership of the cemetery land remains with the Council.

☐ Council Cemeteries: Bereavement/Cemeteries Department.

☐ Private Cemeteries: Contact office directly for forms.

☐ Funeral Director: Can arrange interment notice paperwork.

☐ Keep burial deed safe — it proves ownership.

☐ Online application forms may be available via local council.
