10. Funeral procession and Daffan (The Burial)
☐ Carrying the coffin after the Janazah and lowering into the ground is heavy and strenuous. This step is labour intensive. Consider delegating to others if you have health problems.
☐ Try not to jolt or shake the body.
☐ Recommended dua of entering the graveyard.
- Assalāmu alaykum ahlad-diyāri minal-mu’mineena wa ‘l-muslimeen.
- Wa inna In Shā’ Allahu bikum lāḥiqūnnas’alullāha lanā wa lakumul-`āfiyah.
- Peace be upon you, people of this abode, from among the believers and those who are Muslims, and we, by the Will of Allah, shall be joining you.
☐ Do not walk on graves.
☐ Follow the funeral procession, and do not go ahead of it.
☐When lowering into the grave, recommend to say ‘Bismillahi wa ‘ala sunnat Rasul-Allahi’.
☐ Bury body on right side facing Qiblah.
☐ Recommended throw initially 3 handfuls of soil, with a dua.
☐ Make the grave a little higher than the ground by approximately a handspan, and not to make it level with the ground, so that it may be distinguished as a grave.
☐ Flowers are optional; duʿā (prayers for forgiveness) are preferred.
☐ After burial, face the Qiblah, recite supplications and quietly pray for the deceased, and supplications for forgiveness.
☐There are numerous uncertainties amongst the Muslim community as to whether women are permitted to attend funerals and visit graveyards. It is important that we recognise that our religion provides us the scope to respect, encourage, and accept the choice of women attending or not attending. https://raleighmasjid.org/basic-rules-of-islamic-funerals/
